High Protein Low Calorie Meals: 10 Dinners Under 500 kcal

September 9, 2026

Most "high protein low calorie" lists online are a photo, a title and a number someone typed in. These ten are different in one specific way: every recipe below is a fixed version with exact quantities, and its calorie and macro totals are computed from those quantities. Click any card and you get the full ingredient list, the method, and the same numbers.

The filter was simple. Under 500 kcal for the whole recipe as written, and at least 25 g of protein. Nothing that scraped in at 24 g, nothing rounded down to fit.

How the ten were chosen

We started from recipes with a real photo, a full method, and ingredient quantities in grams. Then we applied the two thresholds and kept the ones that actually pass, not the ones that pass if you swap the oil for spray. The result is ten dinners between 428 and 480 kcal, with protein ranging from 48 g (the beef skewers) to 62 g (the chicken and fish meatballs).

Two things are deliberately not on this list: the fake "low calorie" dishes where the number only works for a portion nobody serves, and anything relying on a protein powder or a supplement. Chicken, fish, beef, ham, and one vegetarian dish built on textured soy protein.

What a 450 kcal dinner does to your day

Say your daily target is 1,800 kcal. A 450 kcal dinner leaves 1,350 for breakfast, lunch and anything in between, which is a comfortable day rather than a hungry one. At a 1,400 kcal target the same dinner is almost a third of your intake, and lunch needs to be lighter.

That is the whole point of knowing the number. If you have not worked out your own target, our free calorie calculator takes about a minute and uses your height, weight, age, sex and activity, not a guess.

A note on the quantities

Every recipe here is a fixed quantity. It is not scaled to your body or your goal, and the page says so. Adjusting each recipe's quantities to a personal calorie target, and doing it for a full week with a grocery list, is what we are building at MenuVita. Until then, these ten are free to cook from, and you can find more on our recipes page.

Common questions

What counts as a high protein low calorie meal?
There is no official definition. For this list we used two numbers: under 500 kcal for the whole recipe as written, and at least 25 g of protein. Every dish here clears both, and most land between 430 and 480 kcal with 48 to 62 g of protein.
Why does protein matter when you are cutting calories?
Two reasons that hold up in practice. Protein is the most filling of the three macronutrients per calorie, so a 450 kcal plate with 50 g of protein keeps you full for longer than 450 kcal of mostly carbohydrate. And when you are in a deficit, eating enough protein is what helps your body keep muscle while it loses fat.
Are these portions for one person?
Each recipe is a fixed quantity, not a portion calculated for a specific person. The totals are for the recipe exactly as written on its page. Whether that is one dinner or a dinner and a half depends on your own daily target.
How many of these should I eat in a day?
That depends entirely on your daily calorie target. At 1,800 kcal a day, one of these dinners is roughly a quarter of your intake. At 1,400 it is closer to a third. Our free calculator gives you your own number in about a minute.
